Jail House Rock

Ok, I know, cheesy title, but that's what song's playing on the radio right now (Krock), and it suits my day just fine!

I had an orientation and tour of the jail that I will be doing my internship at today...and WOW! I have to say, it was an eye-opening, and EXCITING experience!!!!

My supervisor gave me a tour of the whole correctional center, and I met quite a few people working there. I also met a correctional security guard who is a World Champion Shodo-Kan Karate champion, 4th degree black belt. My supervisor thought we would get along well since karate is one of my passions as well. Somehow, I doubt I will be spending alot of time where he works though (the inmates'cell unit).

I met another psychologist and him and I had some fantastic conversation, about what kind of inmates come in, comparing models of thearpy (I know, geek psychology talk). He filled me in on some stories about his past therapy experiences with clients. I was intrigued! Actually, I think I was just so happy to be able to understand all the terminology and apply some relevant information to his stories.

The most exciting part was sitting in on one of his therapy sessions with an inmate. As the psychologist was interviewing him, literally, I could feel all those years of reading about psychology personality disorders coming to life. Lightbulbs were popping up as I sat there, fascinated with being able to see these personality disorders that I've been reading about all these years...COME TO LIFE!!!

I just had an exam on Personality Disorders, Schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, so it was still very fresh in my mind, and I knew exactly what diagnose each inmate probably had, just by listening to them talk.

Seriously, very interesting stuff. I met a guy who was narcissitic, (self-centered, self-admiring), a paranoid schizophrenic, and a very delusional inmate..let me tell you, she was quite a character!!! She made absolutely no sense because her brain is so clouded from doing crack; yet, I had to pretend that I was understanding what she was saying.

Quite amusing.

And on top of that, I met the other intern students, and turns out that one of the occupational therapist students is a acquaintance friend of mine that I had not seen or heard from in about a year! So that was very cool.

I go back tomorrow, and am VERY excited!

Wow, day 2 (of 4) of the Family Therapy intensive (I'm staying at Kam's place right now in Red Deer, since school's in Lacombe), and MAN!!!!! IT IS MAJORLY draining!!! Class goes from 9:30AM to 5:30PM and it's straight, hardcore learning of all the different theories we can use as models for when we become therapists.

I haven't started my internship yet, but I start observing and sitting in on inmates' therapy sessions at the Fort Saskachewan jail next Wednesday, so I'm pretty excited about that!

Well, back to the books!

Hmm...does anyone else get a "high" from flipping through the daily newspaper? Certain sections of it, even?

Ok, I have some confessions:

I get quite excited about the "Bistro" section (FOOD! RECIPES!), "Culture" (movies and hollywood gossip!), "Body and Health" (exercise tips, personal trainer interviews)...and yes, sadly...I especially get excited about supermarket/grocery flyers - I absolutely love sitting down in the morning, eating my breakfast and flipping through them to see what kinds of yummy foods are on sale, and sometimes I'll fantasize about stuffing my mouth with these delicious, fattening cakes, chocolate bars, cookies, peanut butter -since I wouldn't actually do that in real life.

Oh...and I love looking at the Sears and Bay weekend flyers too! Is all this normal, or am I just an abnormally odd person that seems to be entertained easily by FLYERS?

Bodyfat Research

Dan did some research to see where we stand according to bodyfat percentage charts. And according to these charts, Dan is between ideal and average, while I am considered underfat and lean.

Umm...that's a NICE vote of confidence, but in all reality, DO I REALLY LOOK LEAN!? I would consider myself between ideal and average as well.

Dan is convinced that our bodyfat percentages aren't accurate, and we're in the midst of trying to figure out what the best way of measuring bodyfat is, without paying a ridiculous amount of money (I.e., I know the best way to measure bodyfat is via water, but it costs at least $40!)

PS: WHY do I always have so much energy at night?! I can't ever go to sleep early!

Bodyfat Countdown!

Ok, so another competition between Dan and I, is on!

On Saturday, we both got our bodyfat measured (first time for both of us), and I predicted mine pretty accurately (I thought it would be around 15%). Turns out, our body fat percentages are quite close: I have about 16%, and Dan has 15%.

I feel pretty good about 16%, although, now I have an actual number to work with to further challenge myself to decrease it. Dan was a little disappointed in his number though, since he thought he would be less.

So what's the competition, you ask? (Ok, maybe you didn't, but I'm here to tell you). First person to lose 6% bodyfat gets to choose a desired activity for both of us to engage in, and "loser" has to pay. Dan, who is so confident he will win, has already considered bungee jumping as a "reward" (something I WILL NEVER have the guts to do), but since he's pretty much had his share of thrills from bungee jumping, he'll probably end up picking something else (that is, if he wins...which he WON'T, b/c I won't let him!)

My strategy to win? BAKE LOTS OF GOODIES that Dan can't refuse and feed them to him!! *Insert evil laughter* Meanwhile, I will be taking up the Kinetix Program again, and hopefully this time, won't get lazy and take too many "free target days" like before (Oops).

Dan and I will be measuring our bodyfat every 4 weeks. This should be exciting, some new motivation! Anyone else got any ideas as rewards we could have?

PS: I'm a little bit disappointed in the lack of comments for the Halloween photos! C'mon people, I know you saw them!
